Scope: Design a new 12,000 s.f. multi-use laboratory for United States Geological Survey Goal: Find a comprehensive way for all labs with various functions to cohesively work together and create a building to fit within the context of the existing U.S.G.S. campus in Northern California. Challenge: Design a modern building that fit within the context of the older campus without making an individual statement. Work with a complicated and multi-user program under extreme timeline pressures. Solution: Use inter-disciplinary skills and technology to communicate with all the people involved to reach a quick consensus on the building program. We also used creative ways of formulating construction documents and bidding procedures that paralleled the US Government process but allowed us to save time.
